(Edmonton, August 1, 2017) YMCA of Northern Alberta is proud to announce a three-year pledge totalling $45,000 from Canadian Western Bank in support of the YMCA’s Family Allies program.
“Canadian Western Bank has been an outstanding and strong supporter of YMCA of Northern Alberta over the years. This most recent support will ensure families who access the YMCA Family Allies program acquire and maintain stable, affordable and appropriate housing, improve family function and achieve improved mental and physical health,” says Nick Parkinson, YMCA of Northern Alberta, President and CEO. “Healthy families create strong kids and thriving communities, and the Family Allies program helps vulnerable families achieve their potential to be contributing members of that thriving community.”
“CWB Financial Group has had a long-standing relationship with the YMCA of Northern Alberta. We are committed to making a difference right in the communities where we live and work, and partnering with the YMCA helps us accomplish this goal,” said Michael Halliwell, Senior VP & Regional General Manager, Northern Alberta Region. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with YMCA within the Family Allies Program. Housing is a basic essential all families need to thrive, and as local community members, we want to ensure families are successful and continue to have safe, attainable housing. The Family Allies Program not only helps with this need but supports families through other vital life skills that many of us might take for granted.”
YMCA FAMILY ALLIES PROGRAM
YMCA of Northern Alberta developed Family Allies to help low-income families attain and maintain safe, stable and affordable housing while addressing the root causes of poverty as identified in the study: income support, employment, education, child care, mental and physical health and overall family functioning.
Family Allies provides case management to 40 vulnerably housed families and their children (over 100 individuals) each year and addresses their need to stabilize and maintain adequate housing. Once the family is appropriately housed, staff support them to set goals and identify strategies to improve family functioning.
Family Allies intervenes before families are in crisis and works to address their needs so they continue on a path that leads them further and further from the edge they have been living on. Working with other YMCA programs and partnering agencies in the community, Family Support Workers help families navigate through the various supports and services available to help ensure long term success.
