Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

On behalf of the YMCA in Canada, I am reaching out to you regarding today’s announcement to increase the wage subsidy to 75%. We are delighted to see this response, and we welcome enhanced supports for employers.

This increase will have a significant impact on the charitable and nonprofit sector and our ability to maintain employee connections to our organizations. Imagine Canada’s most recent estimates show that almost 200,000 individuals could be laid off in response to this pandemic. For the YMCA, this means that of the over 20,950 employees that have been laid off due to COVID-19 related impacts, some could have the opportunity to return to work. As we work to continue to meet need the urgent needs of our communities, this would be significant for the YMCA and those we serve.

Access to this subsidy would help us to remain viable, so we can be counted on to deliver the services Canadians will need, such as child care and employment and training programs, on the road to economic recovery. For over 100 years Canadians have counted on us in times of economic hardship. Access to this subsidy would help us to continue helping Canadians.

We understand that details of this announcement are to come and we are looking for clarity on three items:
  1. The explicit inclusion of the charitable and nonprofit sector in these new measures;
  2. A significant increase on the cap per employee that this would apply to; and
  3. A significant increase on the cap per organization.
We would be happy to work with you on the inclusion of the charitable and non-profit sector in this measure.  In addition, there remains a need for broader sector stabilization support as the impact to our organizations has been significant.

Thank you again for responding to the evolving needs of Canadians and employers. We look forward to future announcements to support children, families and vulnerable Canadians, as well as specific supports for the charitable and nonprofit sector in the days to come.

Yours sincerely,
