William Lutsky Family YMCA

Completion of Grade 7 is required.

The Counsellor-in-Training program is a leadership opportunity for youth to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become a camp counsellor.  Each ‘Counsellor-in-Training’ (CIT) must complete the CIT training program; training dates will be shared through the interview process.  Following the training, they will take part in a two-week placement at one of our locations.  Participants are placed in different day camp programs based on their experience in the CIT Program and the ‘Leader-in-Training’ (LIT) program.
Completion of Grade 7 is required.  Counsellor-in-Training participants are volunteers.

Interested youth must register in-branch or online in the CIT Application course; all applicants will be contacted for an interview.  Successful candidates will then register for the CIT program and will be required to complete a police security clearance.  For more information, please contact your local YMCA.

  • Level 1 - The CIT program is designed for participants to acquire necessary skills to become a counsellor, including planning and delivering activities, observing campers in various age groups, asset building, communication, and trust.
  • Level 2 - The second level of the CIT program enhances skills learned in Level 1.  Participants will learn new skills, including team building, behaviour management, and safety awareness.
  • Level 3 - The third level of the CIT program builds on the previous levels and prepares participants for the step from CIT to counsellor while learning skills such as conflict resolution, leadership, and special needs integration.

    It's All About the Beads

At YMCA Day Camp, value beads play an important role as a sign of character and personal achievement.  Beads at camp promote positive behaviour, and are worn as a constant reminder of what we value as a camp community.  Throughout the week, beads are awarded to individuals for demonstrating the YMCA core values of friendship, caring, honesty, diversity, social inclusion, responsibility, respect, leadership and excellence.
