The Project L.E.A.P. (Literacy, Education and Play) program is designed for children in grades 4, 5 and 6 who would benefit from additional literacy support. The program is intended to help build critical reading comprehension and writing skills that will assist children to develop a lifelong love of reading as well as succeed in both school and life. Within each hour and a half class, Project L.E.A.P. progressively introduces children to a specific reading comprehension or writing skill by providing time in class for children to learn, practice and apply the new skill introduced.
The reading comprehension and writing skill fundamentals that children will be exposed over the eight week period includes:
- Grammar and punctuation
- Sentence structure
- Paragraph structure
- Writing with purpose
- Reading with fluency
- Story prediction
- Reading extension
- Identifying main ideas
A variety of reading materials and skill-based activities, including books, comics, nursey rhymes, poetry, worksheets, puzzles, games and art, are utilized to improve children’s reading competence and confidence in a safe, caring, and fun atmosphere.
At the conclusion of the program, children will have increased their reading confidence and have tools to assist them in their understanding and ability to comprehend text and write a proper sentence. Children will leave the program with a portfolio of the activities they completed and a certificate.
The first four weeks of Project L.E.A.P. are dedicated to writing skills, while the following four weeks are focused on building reading comprehension skills. Class sizes are kept small so that the Program Instructor can provide both group and individual support as necessary. The Program Instructor also provides continuous encouragement and constructive feedback to children regarding their work and progress during the eight week period.
Project L.E.A.P typically operates one and a half hours per week for an eight week session during out of school-time hours.
