Built by the community
In the early 1980s, the Castle Downs Recreation Society (CDRS) established a vision for a district park located in Castle Downs. The CDRS is composed of several community leagues in the area. The community dreamt of a park site that contained sport fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and a major recreation centre. In 1989, the City of Edmonton opened the Castle Downs Recreation Centre with twin ice arenas and a community hall. Still, more remained to be accomplished in order to have a fully developed recreation centre, a recreation centre that boasted areas to exercise and socialize, a swimming pool, and a gymnasium. At that time, however, the city did not have room in their budget to do this.
In response to this need, the CDRS and the Edmonton YMCA (now called the YMCA of Northern Alberta) began a partnership in the early 1990s to bring a family health and fitness centre to Castle Downs. The success of this work arose from the close alignment of the values of the CDRS and YMCA—both believed strongly in the need to serve the community in its full diversity – individuals and families, toddlers and seniors, men and women, and all ethnic backgrounds.
It took incredible leadership to bring a family centre to Castle Downs. The community strongly advocated for a YMCA to be built in Castle Downs. In addition, the YMCA of Northern Alberta forged a partnership with the city and other communities in Edmonton. In 1995 the YMCA of Northern Alberta launched the largest capital campaign in its history –$14.4 M for two family YMCAs. The CDRS committed to raising $250,000 for a YMCA in Castle Downs and exceeded its goal by raising $310,000. They accomplished this while raising $200,000 towards a playground in the park—generating these funds was a tremendous “stretch goal” for the community. The end result was the start of construction of the Castle Downs Family YMCA in June 1997 and a grand opening on June 20, 1998.
The Castle Downs Family YMCA is the only family YMCA in Edmonton named after a community. The YMCA of Northern Alberta recognized the years of commitment and support and funds that this north Edmonton community brought to the goal of building a family YMCA. To this day, the CDRS and the Castle Downs Family YMCA remain close partners in meeting the needs of the community. The CD Family YMCA appreciates the CDRS as a group dedicated to the community.
Moreover, the society’s ongoing work to develop Castle Downs Park creates a great environment around the YMCA and provides playgrounds and park space for its programs.
The relationship between the Castle Downs Recreation Society and Castle Downs Family YMCA began in 1990, and it remains strong to this day. These two organizations are true partners in building a healthy community.
