Do you want to contribute to your community in a positive way?  The YMCA Collective Kitchen Program provides healthy, low-cost meals to participants while teaching cooking skills and food safety in a warm community environment.  Collective Kitchen classes meet for two hours once per week and work together to prepare three meals.  Participants take the food home at a cost of $3 per portion.  The YMCA is seeking a motivated individual that will provide service to the participants of Collective Kitchens. At all times this individual will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with vulnerable populations who face personal and socioeconomic challenges.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide program assistance to the Collective Kitchen Instructors; helping to set-up for classes, supporting participants during classes and helping to clean up afterwards
  • Promote food literacy and healthy lifestyle choices
  • Maintain a safe and positive environment for program participants
  • Demonstrate and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, and values and the YMCA programs and services
  • Active supervision of participants during programming
 
Qualifications:
  • Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration
    • Standard First Aid and CPR-C and WHMIS Certification
    • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Food Safety Certification preferred
    • Minimum 18 years of age
    • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Experience
    • Experience working with cultural groups, high needs and marginalized populations considered an asset
    • Experience working in a kitchen setting will be considered an asset
  • Knowledge/Skills
    • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal and team skills
    • Sensitive to and demonstrative knowledge of dealing with the needs of participants from different cultural and backgrounds
    • Friendly, energetic, positive attitude
 
Hours/Availability:
Minimum 2 hours per week Monday - Friday between 9:30am – 830pm.
