YMCA of Northern Alberta is proud to announce that it will return to Red Deer after two decades to lease and operate the Northside Community Centre.

The City of Red Deer and the YMCA have negotiated an agreement that will see the Y lease and operate the Northside Community Centre for a five-year term. While programming and fee details are being finalized, citizens of Red Deer can expect quality programs that will support the well-being of everyone in the community.

For 111 years, YMCA of Northern Alberta has been dedicated to nurturing the potential of children, youth, and families, while promoting healthy living and fostering social responsibility in its communities. The programs offered at the Northside Community Centre will reflect those goals, and will enhance the lives of Red Deerians.

“It is an immense honour to have this opportunity to serve and support Red Deer’s families and communities,” said YMCA of Northern Alberta president and CEO, Nick Parkinson. “The YMCA of Northern Alberta looks forward to working with residents and community groups to offer programs, services, and an approach that is inclusive to all and fosters a sense of well-being within the community.”

The YMCA first approached the City of Red Deer this past spring with an interest in serving the people of Red Deer through operating the Northside Community Centre. Over the summer, City Administration explored this operating model, and eventually the two groups negotiated an agreement.

This partnership is an ideal fit, as the City of Red Deer and the YMCA are aligned in their focus. Both want to see strong and healthy communities where all people are included and can thrive. And both want to provide the Red Deer community with exceptional health and wellness opportunities.

Construction of the Northside Community Centre is already underway and the facility is set to open in July 2019.
