Grades 4–6

This program (formerly Book Club) is the follow-up to Literacy Learners 1 (it’s not a requirement, but it is, however, highly recommended). 

While exploring a chapter book, your child will discover and gain essential tools and methods to improve writing, reading, and comprehension skills.  By the time your child finishes their session they will have read a chapter book and completed a very creative and unique book talk (a book summary with projects that develop a deeper understanding of the text).  They will have the opportunity to present their project to the class and family members during the last day of the session. 

They will be able to:

  • Discover the theme
  • Summarize the plot
  • Determine the main ideas and important details
  • Develop a deeper understanding of literacy
  • Write with clarity and purpose
  • Present to a group

Popular and appropriate reading level novels are carefully selected for each session to ensure children are engrossed in the reading journey.   The first 30 minutes of each class is spent on having children read in large group, small group or independent settings.  Reading is then followed by focused time to ensure that children understand what they have just read by reviewing vocabulary and story plot points through the use of worksheets, puzzles and games.  The remaining 30 minutes of the class is devoted to having children work on their individual book related project.  Children are encouraged to be creative and have access to a variety of art and craft mediums in order to complete their project.

At the conclusion of the program, children will have completed a novel and prepared a book talk presentation that will be shared with parents on the final day of the program.  Children will leave the program with a portfolio of the activities they completed and a certificate.

Class sizes are kept small so that the Program Instructor can provide both group and individual support as necessary.  The Program Instructor also provides continuous encouragement and constructive feedback to children regarding their work and progress during the seven-week period. 

Literacy 2 typically operates one and a half hours per week for an eight week session during out of school-time hours.
