YMCA Family Resource Centre

Located within the Boyle Street Plaza at 9538-103 A Avenue and directly across from the Melcor YMCA Village.  The YMCA Family Resource Centre provides meaningful programming that responds to the needs of all members of the community. Some of the programs offered are listed below:

  • Collective Kitchen: Collective Kitchen offers participants the opportunity to prepare affordable healthy meals for themselves and their families at a low cost and provides the opportunity to learn basic nutrition, food purchase, preparation and safe food handling skills and socialize as they prepare their food.
  • Positive Discipline: Positive Discipline is a free 8-week parenting program offered 2-3 times per year, based on expressed interest and available funding.   The program, taught by certified instructors, is a parenting program designed to teach important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults.  The program is based on the best-selling Positive Discipline parenting books by Dr. Jane Nelsen.  Free child minding is offered to parents attending the session as well as a light meal. 
  • Play Time: Play time is a parented stay and play program that engages parents in their child’s healthy development through play. Stay and Play is currently offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.   Children from babies to the age of 5 can participate.
  • Homework Help: Homework Help is provided to children ages 5-12 on Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Program staff and volunteers assist children with any homework they may have and further engage children through age appropriate literacy and numeracy activities.
  • Family Allies: Family Allies provides case management to 40 vulnerably housed families and their children (over 100 individuals) each year and addresses their need to stabilize and maintain adequate housing. Once the family is stably housed, staff support them to set goals and identify strategies for improving family functioning issues that they want to address. The program currently receives funding from the Butler Family Foundation, the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Stollery Charitable Foundation.
  • Family Ties: Family Ties supports families with at least one child aged 7-18 who are at-risk of involvement with Child and Family Services address their family functioning issues and connects them to community services and supports. The Family Ties program is currently funding through Edmonton Region Child and Family Services.
