Grande Prairie Region YMCA

The YMCA of Northern Alberta began offering two Housing First services in Grande Prairie in collaboration with the Grande Prairie Municipality and other Housing First service providers in the community.  The YMCA offers Centralized Intake and Assessment and Prevention and Diversion Services and Permanent Supportive Housing Services.

Both programs embrace the Housing First principle that every person has the right to a safe, secure home.  The focus is on ending homelessness by priorizing the most vulnerable and by providing permanent housing and follow-up support.  Individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness are assessed, housed first and then given appropriate supports to address barriers, establish relationships, access resources and improve skills to maintain their housing. Support is provided through several strategies that respond to the needs of the individual, couple or family.

1) YMCA Centralized Assessment and Prevention & Diversion Services

The focus of Centralized Intake and Assessment is working with the community Housing First delivery agencies to ensure a comprehensive and timely response to people who seek housing supports and services.Centralized Intake and Assessment begins by assessing the eligibility of a person, couple or family for Housing First Services.  Staff complete a Triage process with a client using a standard tool and then complete a more comprehensive assessment to determine the degree of housing vulnerability and the most appropriate level and kind of service to offer to the client.  Services can include as little as a referral to a community resource such as a clothing depot or a food bank, or it could include information and referral to income programs or human service agencies.  Or people may clearly require an intensive Housing First support program and are assigned to one of the various community-based programs that can address the particular needs of the person(s).

2) CAIRN YMCA Permanent Supportive Housing

The YMCA Permanent Supportive Housing program is based on the Housing First principles and works with individuals, couples and families who are tenants at Cairn on the Boulevard, Willow Place or access other community-based housing options.  The Program Staff work with individuals who would benefit from receiving on-going client supports in order to sustain their housing for the long-term, access services effectively and optimize their ability to direct their own life, make their own choices and improve their quality of life.
