Community Programs – After School Learning Adventures
After School Learning Adventures (ASLA) is a program in Grande Prairie that helps students between 7 and 11 years of age engage, focus and succeed. Specially designed activities, games and experiential learning give students the boost they need to master literacy, numeracy, physical literacy and complete homework assignments - all in an environment that's fun, safe and comfortable.
Students who are identified as needing additional educational support participate in the program on a referral basis. Trained facilitators supervise activities and workshops based on the YMCA Healthy Child Development Framework. Workshops are presented at Hillside Community School (Monday and Wednesday) and at Swanavon Elementary School (Tuesday and Thursday) over the course of the school year.
Children who participate in ASLA demonstrate:
- An increase in positive feelings and attitudes towards reading, physical activity and completing homework
- Improved literacy skills
- An increase in developmentally appropriate skills
- Feeling a sense of belonging
After School Learning Adventures would not be available to our community’s kids without the support of people like you.
