The YMCA’s Youth Transitions Program (YTP) is a free service focused on providing support to youth aged 13 – 19. Our team of Youth Advisors meet with youth from all walks of life to help them overcome their barriers, and support them in reaching their fullest potential.
How to Adult, one of the workshops offered by YTP, is a comprehensive program designed to assist participants who are thinking about, or making the transition to independent living. This unique program consists of eight sessions and covers topics including, but not limited to: financial literacy, housing, employment, nutrition, preparing for post-secondary education, professional relationships, effective communication, conflict resolution, healthy relationships, and personal care.
This workshop is primarily geared towards youth who are between 17-19 years of age and who would like to better prepare themselves for entering the next chapter of their lives. Like all YTP workshops, How to Adult uses a multi-media approach to facilitation, using lectures, videos, scenarios, guest speakers, and other interactive methods to ensure every learner achieves a full grasp of the material presented.
In addition to receiving eight weeks of instruction, participants attending the How to Adult workshop will have access to a full range of other services provided by YTP including:
Youth Advisors are able to provide free supportive counselling, community referrals, advocacy services, life-skills workshops and job-search assistance. All youth who are connected to YTP have access to one of our three Youth Advisors who are able to meet with youth to create a plan to move the participant’s life in a positive direction.
YTP Rec Nights
The goal of the YTP Rec. Nights program is to introduce youth to recreational activities they may not normally get to experience. This free program meets once per week during after-school hours and provides an entertaining and safe place where youth are able to participate in new activities and make friends.
YTP offers a wide variety of additional workshops that can help meet the needs of our participants, including UnCenZered, Band of Brothers, Urban youth Life Skills and Sky High.
