Annual General Meeting
To voting members of the YMCA Community,
On March 15, 2020 the Government of Alberta declared a Public Health Emergency that resulted in the immediate and mandatory closure of non-essential businesses and services including all YMCA Child Care centres, health, fitness and aquatic facilities and services and all YMCA programs that serve children and youth.
Throughout the state of emergency, the YMCA of Northern Alberta has continued to provide programs and services to those most vulnerable, including the continued operation of the YMCA Melcor Welcome Village, a secure, 150 housing-unit facility. An impressive library of digital resources, classes and supports have also been provided to the communities of central and northern Alberta during this time.
On May 14, 2020 the Government of Alberta initiated a plan to “relaunch” Alberta’s economy. Now in phase one of a three phase plan, our YMCA is cautiously hopeful that we will be opening our programs, services and spaces to the YMCA community very soon. However, we know that a slow and careful approach is required to ensure the health and safety of Albertans.
The YMCA of Northern Alberta continues to ensure we are doing our part to stop the spread and impact of COVID-19, including limiting unessential gatherings and continuing to promote physical distancing. It is because of our commitment to public health and safety that we postponed the 2020 YMCA Annual General Meeting (AGM) originally scheduled in April and for the same reason we are hosting a virtual AGM on June 30. The Board recognizes that while restrictions are being eased, it would not be prudent to gather the YMCA’s voting membership in-person at this time.
In addition to the virtual nature of this year’s annual general meeting, the meeting will also be shorter in length and focus primarily on the approval of the 2019 YMCA AGM minutes, appointment of the auditor for the current fiscal year, and election of new and re-election of directors. We will not be formally recognizing our volunteers at the meeting and will instead look for an alternate time to express our highest praise and deepest gratitude for our amazing YMCA volunteers.
The 2020 YMCA AGM will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams, a free application that will allow quorum to be established and participants to observe and participate in the proceedings. The Board invites all interested voting members of the YMCA Community to participate.
Work to prepare for the 2020 YMCA AGM is well underway, including approval of the audited financial statements and posting to the YMCA of Northern Alberta website, as is our practice. The Board is working to balance the health and safety of the community with their responsibility to share key information and decisions. We continue to be grateful to the voting members of the YMCA Community for continuing to trust in our leadership.
If you, as a voting member of the YMCA Community, would like to participate in the 2020 YMCA AGM in its virtual forum, we ask that you register by contacting Sabina Brouwer, Executive Assistant to the President & CEO, by email or telephone. You will receive confirmation of your registration as well as a link to the virtual meeting.
We look forward to the day when we can re-activate all of our YMCA programs and services in central and northern Alberta.
Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement.
