Stage 3 Changes At YMCA Health And Wellness Centres

June 29, 2021

To our YMCA community,

Effective July 1, 2021, Alberta will enter Stage 3 of the Open for Summer Plan. Stage 3 sees the lifting of most public health restrictions across the province. At the YMCA, there is nothing more important than the health and safety of our members, participants, staff, and volunteers. We will continue to meet or exceed all Alberta Health guidelines and recommendations to limit the risk of exposure and spread of COVID-19 as we enter Stage 3 of Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan.

We want to provide you with some updates and clarification on how Alberta's move to Stage 3 impacts YMCA Health and Wellness Centres and summer programs:

Please note that all YMCA centres will be closed on July 1, 2021 in observance of Canada Day.

Facility Capacity, Cleaning & Physical Distancing

To help keep our communities safe, YMCA of Northern Alberta capacity and physical distancing guidelines will remain in effect until further notice. Pre-booking will be required for lane swimming, family swimming, group fitness classes and all sports using YMCA courts.

All staff, members and volunteers must adhere to YMCA's enhanced cleaning, sanitization and social distancing protocols.

Mask Guidelines

In accordance with provincial and municipal decisions to deactivate the existing face-covering mandate as of July 1, 2021, face coverings are no longer mandatory inside YMCA facilities. However, we strongly encourage YMCA members to continue wearing masks to help keep YMCA spaces healthy for all.

Masks will continue to be required by all YMCA staff and volunteers while inside all YMCA facilities, with exemptions granted during fitness classes, or while outdoors.

Pre-Visit Health Screening

All YMCA members are no longer required to complete the online health screening tool. However, we ask that you use discretion and consider the following questions when entering a YMCA facility:

  • Are you sick, or, do you have new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Have you had close contact* with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days?

  • Have you travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days?

If you answer "yes" to any of the above questions, we ask that you do not enter a YMCA facility.

*If you are immunized for COVID-19, different quarantine rules and testing recommendations may apply if you are exposed to a person with COVID-19. Visit Alberta Health Services' website for more information.

YMCA Summer Camps and Clubs Health Screening

Starting July 5, 2021, children must be screened daily by a parent or guardian before signing into camps and clubs. Parents can refer to the YMCA Stay at Home Guide to determine if their child(ren) is fit to enter a YMCA location.

YMCA Plus Members, Hot Tubs & Steam Rooms (Edmonton only)

In Edmonton, all YMCA Plus members can access the Plus Locker Rooms. Towel service and razor distribution will continue at the entry desk. To keep you safe, shared amenities such as shaving cream, deodorant, body lotion, etc. will not be provided at this time. Newspaper service will be unavailable and social seating will be limited to adhere to 2-metre physical distancing.

Hot tubs and steam rooms will be open with capacity limits posted.

Fitness Equipment & Bottle Filling Stations

To keep our members safe, fitness equipment will be spaced to maintain proper physical distancing. While we want to ensure that you have access to your fitness equipment of choice, some fitness equipment may be unavailable due to YMCA sanitization protocols.

It is important to stay hydrated during physical activity. To help keep you hydrated, all bottle filling stations are available for use. Please be sure to bring your own water bottle, as personal water fountain use is not available at this time.

Lost & Found

If you have any items that may be in the Lost & Found, please contact your YMCA centre directly. You will have 24 hours to claim any personal belongings in the Lost & Found, at which point, they will be disposed of.
