Westwood Family YMCA
Westwood Family YMCA (closure): Nick's Message & Banner
Dear valued Westwood Family YMCA members,
We at YMCA of Northern Alberta thank you for your patience, commitment and passion for your YMCA. We have all navigated many challenges in 2020 as well as in recent years, and we are more than grateful that you are a part of our Y community.
It is with sadness that we must announce that the Westwood Family YMCA, which has been closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will not be reopening and is permanently closed effective November 4th, 2020.
We know this news may be very disappointing to you, and want you to know we share your disappointment. Unfortunately, the Westwood Family YMCA is not a sustainable operation. Having suffered for the last seven years from decreased membership levels and revenue, while seeing increased competition in the market, increased building and repair costs and increased labour needs and costs. Our centre was simply not in a financial position to weather the significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
YMCA of Northern Alberta is extremely grateful to all of our members and supporters over the 34-year history of the Westwood Family YMCA. We look forward to continuing to offer many health and fitness programs at the Eagle Ridge Community Centre, and we’re excited about the opportunity to develop and offer new programs and services. To bridge the gap in your fitness routine, all Westwood Family YMCA members can access our group fitness classes at Eagle Ridge Community Centre free of charge until the end of 2020. Additionally, MacDonald Island Park is offering all YMCA members a free one-month pass. Just show your YMCA membership card and a photo ID. That offer is valid until February 1, 2021.
Please know that Westwood’s closure is not the end of the YMCA in Wood Buffalo. We are extremely proud to continue to serve the community through our seven YMCA Child Care centres, nine community and housing programs and the operation of the Eagle Ridge Community Centre. In fact, we’ve more than doubled the number of community and child care programs we offer since 2008.
For the past number of years, YMCA of Northern Alberta has relied on annual grant funding from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) to support the operations of the Westwood Family YMCA. This funding is no longer a solution due to age of the centre and the magnitude of funding required as a result of the impacts of COVID-19. Our long-time partnership with the RMWB remains strong. We are extremely thankful for their past support and look forward to continuing to work together to serve the communities of Wood Buffalo in the future.
In that spirit, we remain deeply committed to Wood Buffalo and to finding new and innovative ways to offer programs and opportunities for everyone to connect, belong and thrive. We again thank you sincerely for your past support and hope you’ll remain involved as we continue to serve our amazing community.
If you have any questions or feedback, please email WestwoodYMCA@northernalberta.ymca.ca any time.
Thank you for your support,
President and CEO
