YMCA Counsellors in Training (CIT)

YMCA Counsellors in Training (CIT)

The Counsellors in Training (CIT) program is a leadership opportunity for youth to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become a camp counsellor. Training dates will be shared upon registration. Following the training, CIT's will take part in a two-week placement at one of our locations. There are opportunities for CIT's to sign-up for more than two weeks. Participants are placed in different day camp programs based on their age and experience in the CIT program and in Leaders in Training (LIT) program (if applicable). Interested youth can apply online or at any YMCA centre. All applicants will be contacted by a program supervisor. For more information, please contact your nearest YMCA.

Participants gain valuable experience through the CIT interview process, training and two-week placement at a YMCA Day Camp. This program offers two progressive levels that allow youth the opportunity to gain experience working while taking on responsibility.

  • Level 1 - Provides participants with an introduction to camp counseling including planning and delivering activities, observing camps and communication. First-year participants will begin at this level.

  • Level 2 - Enhances skills learned in level 1. Participants will learn team building, conflict resolution, and behaviour management strategies and skills. Applicants with two or more years of experience in our counsellors in training program will begin at this level.

Note: CIT program is only available from July to August. Registration opens February 14, 2020, for YMCA members, February 26 online and 28 in-person for non-members. A minimum requirement of 13 years of age is required to participate in the program. CIT participants are volunteers and could use these hours towards their Alberta high school diploma. Ask us how!
