YMCA Youth Transition Program (YTP) offers youth a safe, supportive, non-judgmental community to learn about available community services, meet new friends, participate in fun activities, find a place to stay when needed, find a job, or get help building a résumé.

Accessing YTP Services

Participants are paired with a youth advisor to complete an intake questionnaire that helps identify the areas in the participant’s life that need support. Once completed, youth can utilize one-to-one support and/or participate in several program groups (listed below).

YTP One-To-One Support

Work with a youth advisor to create a plan to move life in a positive direction. Youth advisors are also available when participants just need to talk. Youth advisors provide free supportive counselling, community referrals, advocacy services, life-skills workshops and job-search assistance.

Group Presentations

Youth advisors can provide free in-depth information to groups of youth at schools, group homes, libraries or agencies. Presentations focus on issues and information that affect youth in their transition into adulthood. These presentations can be on a topic of the group’s choice such as healthy relationships, self-esteem, anger management, bullying, etc.

Outreach

All aspects of YTP are available for individuals and groups to access at no charge. Youth advisors are flexible to meet at a public location close to home, school or work.  Additionally, YTP one-to-one support and programming is available in various schools, community agencies and all YMCA locations.

Programs & Workshops

Urban Life Skills
Designed for struggling youth who want to make a change while still attending school, work, or a day program. This group meets once per week during after-school hours and focuses on self-esteem, anger management, healthy relationships, communication and more.

How to Adult
Being an adult can be challenging. This program helps youth develop strategies to successfully transition into adulthood. Participants examine and learn various strategies and techniques for improving their financial literacy, learning how to navigate housing and improving job search skills.

Anger Management
This is a registered, one-to-one, flexible workshop that examines various strategies and techniques for recognizing and managing anger. Throughout the eight weeks, participants go through the stages of the anger cycle and what this looks like in their personal lives, thereby enabling them to recognize signs of anger and manage it.

Leadership
This team of outstanding young leaders is very connected to the Youth Transitions Program and our community in a variety of ways, inclusing fundraising for our national exchanges. Throughout the year, they grow their leadership skills and are a strong presence in the YMCA.

SKY High
SKY High is an outdoor adventure and leadership program that provides an environment in which youth can build skills that help develop personal, academic and career success. Youth participate in workshops and fun activities that may include hiking, mountain biking, rope courses, camping and canoeing. The program works to address barriers to success through group and individual activities.
