Community Recovery Programs

The YMCA's Community Recovery Programs are available in the Wood Buffalo region and are supported by the Red Cross Initiatives Grant program contributing to relief, recovery, and resilience-building in impacted communities by the 2016 Wildfire and 2020 Flood. Current programs include Community Flood Navigation as well as YMCA Support for Wellness. You can also view our community program calendar!

Community Flood Navigation

The Community Flood Coordinator provides assistance, referrals for counselling and community supports, and resources to residents affected by the 2020 regional flood. If you or any of your family members are experiencing:

  • Trauma from the effects of the flood, evacuation
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Sense that your feelings of fear or anger seem exaggerated
  • Mental health struggles
  • Struggling with any effects of trauma (Wildfire 2016, Pandemic, Flood)
  • Depression, anxiety, self-regulation
  • Coping with at homeschooling
  • Domestic violence

Door Knocking Campaign

*Once Government restrictions are lessened, the YMCA Door Knocking Campaign will continue to provide information and check-in with residents who were evacuated or flood-affected.

If you or your family members were affected by the 2020 Flood we would like to hear from you! Our Community Flood Coordinator will work with you and your family to seek answers, connections, and resources and provide a direct referral for further assistance if required. We provide assistance with:

  • Community resources for needs (financial, mental health, family needs, newcomers, wellness, etc.)
  • Updated COVID-19 information and support
  • Mental health referrals and community supports
  • Wellness check-ins


YMCA Support for Wellness

This program provides supports for children, youth, adults, families, and seniors who were impacted by the effects of the 2016 Wildfire. The program offers support to aid in the recovery and build resilience within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, including Fort Chipewyan, Fort MacKay, Anzac, Conklin and Janvier. Services available to the community include:

  • Free supportive 1-1 counselling services
  • Wellness workshops 
  • Education workshops and supports
  • Community events
  • Wellness check-ins
